Learning to Lead Climb
The lead climbing demo at the Erie trip was intended to be just a brief introduction to leading. Learning to lead belay (which is a bit more nuanced than top rope belaying) is an important skill in becoming a competent follower (along with that handy dandy nut cleaning tool which was mentioned!).
Unfortunately, we don't have enough time in this class to teach leading or lead belaying. If you're interested in learning more about this, we encourage you to learn these skills in the safety of a climbing gym located near you:
The Mountaineers also offer a leading on bolts or trad gear course. Many local guiding services (e.g. Northwest Mountain School, Alpine Ascents International) also teach similar courses.
If you have any questions, let the co-chairs know!
