Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the WAC will not be hosting a 2021 Basic Climbing Class

Check back in November 2021 for the 2022 applications

Check out the main WAC website for virtual events and activities we will be hosting throughout the next few months!

The Washington Alpine Club's Basic Climbing Class offers a basic but comprehensive introduction to the technical mountaineering skills required to travel safely over snowfields, glaciers, and high-angle rock. The class size is small to preserve a high instructor-to-student ratio. Students in the course are exposed to the full range of climbing skills, first in a classroom setting, and then in the mountains.

The class usually runs from late February/early March through mid/end of June, and typically costs around $600-700 (this includes course materials, such as books). Students are responsible for additional costs, including the gear required for the class. See the complete gear list here. Most Tuesday night lectures are held in Capitol Hill and ALL week night lectures and field trips are mandatory. Please review the class calendar carefully to ensure attendance.

We will accept applications December 1st - December 31st. You must hike Mount Si with a 30 LB pack and record the time as part of your application to be considered for this course.
